I was incredibly excited when I heard about Tom Perotta’s newest novel, The Leftovers. The premise is so very intriguing – here’s the publisher’s summary:
What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That’s what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children.
Kevin Garvey, Mapleton’s new mayor, wants to speed up the healing process, to bring a sense of renewed hope and purpose to his traumatized community. Kevin’s own family has fallen apart in the wake of the disaster: his wife, Laurie, has left to join the Guilty Remnant, a homegrown cult whose members take a vow of silence; his son, Tom, is gone, too, dropping out of college to follow a sketchy prophet named Holy Wayne. Only Kevin’s teenaged daughter, Jill, remains, and she’s definitely not the sweet “A” student she used to be. Kevin wants to help her, but he’s distracted by his growing relationship with Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family on October 14th and is still reeling from the tragedy, even as she struggles to move beyond it and make a new start.
With heart, intelligence and a rare ability to illuminate the struggles inherent in ordinary lives, Tom Perrotta has written a startling, thought-provoking novel about love, connection and loss.

I’d love to read this book because it sounds thought provoking! Thanks for the great giveaway!
I want to read this mainly because I loved Little Children and The Abstinence Teacher so I’m looking forward to the next book. BUT I think the topic sounds interesting AND almost slightly dystopian but not so much that I wouldn’t be interested.
This makes me think of The Left Behind series, which always fascinated me. Like a poster above, it ties into the the Biblical idea of the rapture. Awesome!!

Interesting concept and sounds like a good read. Look forward to reading this.
I’d like to read this because I enjoyed the “Left Behind” books…at least until they became predictable and rushed. It would be interesting to read someone else’s take on the rapture and it sounds like the author goes a little wider in his look at how those left behind are affected. It should be a good read.
I’ve always been fascinated by thoughts of the apocalypse and the way the world would shift in reaction. I’d like to hope that fear wouldn’t take over our lives if it happened.
Thanks for the giveaway!

I am a bit hesitant about the subject matter, but I think in Perrotta’s hands any theme would work. I want to read this book because I’m such a fan of the author. Little Children & The Abstinence Teacher were both excellent reads!
Thanks so much for offering this giveaway!

Thanks for the giveaway.
Ooooh, how exciting! I’m kindof into this apocalyptic/post-present fiction these days. (Have you read Into the Forest by Jean Hegland? Quite good.) Also, I read The Abstinence Teacher not so long ago, and I’m interested to see how the two compare . . . so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for the next week or so. Thanks!!!

I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic novels, and I’m very interested in reading a novel that focuses on the struggles of the regular people who are left over. It’s usually resistance movements or violence or some sort of barren wasteland. I really want to give it a try.
It looks like such an amazing book. It tackles such a difficult subject – what if the Rapture happened and you got left behind? What if it wasn’t actual the Rapture but something else? How do ordinary people handle losing loved ones to something they know nothing about?
thanks for the chance to read this novel…
This book sounds so mysterious and intriguing. Please enter me in this contest.
I’d love to win because it’s the book I’s seeing everywhere right now. I want to see what all the fuss is about.

The Leftovers by Tom Perotta sounds like a modern day survival tale as people try to come to terms with life after an extraordinary event has rendered all that came before, moot. As a fan of psychology and reader of true adventure stories, I would like to see how the characters in the novel adapt to what is their new reality, as well as learn what precipitated this mass vanishing. The human spirit has infinite capacity to rebound after tragedy and sometimes find a silver lining in the most unlikely of circumstances.
