Book Addiction

just some thoughts on whatever it is that I am reading these days

My participation in this weekend’s Read-a-thon

… was, sadly, very minimal.  I knew in advance that I wouldn’t be able to fully participate as a Reader as I work a full eight-hour day every Saturday, but I had hopes of getting some reading done in the evening between work and dinner, after dinner and late into the night, and cheering on the Readers in between all that.  My plan didn’t work out, however, as my husband and I were invited last-minute to a gala in celebration and support of a local non-profit organization that we felt we really should attend.  So, instead of reading after work, I rushed home, showered and got dressed up, and went out for the evening.  We got home right at 10 pm when my cheerleading shift was supposed to start.  I was only able to successfully visit blogs and cheer for about an hour… my back was killing me from being in heels all day and night, I was super exhausted from a busy day and not much sleep the night before, and I really just wasn’t thinking coherently.  I did try to visit as many readers as I could, but there were SO many that I didn’t have a prayer of getting to them all.  So for those of you that I missed, I do apologize, and know that since I have read a lot of your Read-a-thon posts and am impressed and inspired by your ability to read for so long and with so little sleep.  You are all rockstars!

I have spent much of the morning going through the Read-a-thon website, reading about all the mini-challenges, checking out many participants’ blogs, and seeing everything that I missed yesterday.  I have to say that Trish, Hannah, and Nymeth did an amazing job with the whole thing.  You three did beyond fabulous organizing the Read-a-thon, keeping everyone on task with awesome mini-challenges and fun stuff to do, and making the event sound like the most fun ever (and making ME feel supremely sad that I missed most of it).  Next time around I would really, REALLY love to be able to get the day off work to participate (and I’m seriously going to do everything I can to make that happen) and I’m sure it will be just as great, if not more so, than this one was.  I’m thrilled that I was able to check out so many blogs this time around, and like I said above, I’m thoroughly inspired by how well everyone did.

Anyways, great job everybody.  And a big thank you to the late Dewey, without whom this event would not exist.  I miss Dewey all the time, especially during times like this.  I am sure that wherever she is, she is honored and proud of our community for coming together in her absense and putting together an incredible Read-a-thon.  You guys should be proud of yourselves for honoring her memory, and everything she did for all of us, in such a fantastic way.

Review: I Feel Bad About My Neck

Title:  I Feel Bad About My Neck

Author:  Nora Ephron

Published:  August 8, 2006

Page Count:  176

Genres:  Nonfiction, Essays

My Rating:  3/5

I Feel Bad About My Neck is an essay collection by Nora Ephron about all sorts of things.  Many of the essays have to do with ageing, but some have to do with womanhood in general, some are about being a mother, and there’s even one about reading!  Ephron’s essays are smart and funny and I can see why people enjoy what she writes.

I have to say, however, that for me personally I thought this collection was only okay.  I was entertained by some of the essays, and even found myself laughing out loud in parts, but some of them simply bored me.  So much so that, having finished the book just a few days ago, I can’t even remember very many specifics about it.  The one essay I remember really enjoying was the one about parenting – it was about how parenting today is so drastically different than when Ephron raised her kids.  The points she was making definitely rang true, in my opinion, and it was very funny as well.

I think that I Feel Bad About My Neck will resonate more with women slightly older than myself, because a lot of what Ephron writes is about getting older, and raising kids, and other experiences that I simply haven’t had yet.  It was a good and funny collection of essays, I just didn’t love it and wasn’t nearly as entertained by these essays as I would have liked to be.
